Our worship services
The Reformed Protestant worship service is characterized by joy and an emphasis on listening to the Word of God, personal reflection, and active participation by the community.
Features of our services
Simplicity of the worship space
The Churches of the ERQ are free from elaborate decorations unless the premises used already include such features. The focus is instead on simplicity to avoid any distractions from faith.
Importance of preaching
The sermon, or preaching, is the centerpiece of the service. The pastor comments on a passage from the Bible, interprets it, and applies it to the daily lives of the faithful. A sermon typically lasts about 25 minutes.
Bible reading
Several passages from the Bible are read during the service, drawing from both the Old and New Testaments. The reading of Scripture is essential for the spiritual growth of the community.
Hymns and songs
Reformed worship includes singing, often in the form of psalms or hymns. The arrangement varies between Churches and services but usually features at least a piano or guitar.
Prayer
Prayer holds an important place, with moments of prayer for the community, the world, and individual needs. Prayers may be led by the pastor or members of the community.
Sacraments
The two recognized sacraments are baptism and the Lord's Supper. The Lord's Supper is celebrated once or twice a month and during major liturgical festivals.
Collegiality
Pastors, elders, and deacons are elected by the community, and major decisions are made collegially. Worship services are led by pastors and elders, with the participation of other community members by invitation.
Community participation
The faithful are encouraged to actively participate, whether through singing, praying, or taking on responsibilities within the local Church.
